This song was like medicine to write for me as I recounted each and every time I lost my voice throughout busy touring schedules. I ended up being diagnosed with vocal nodes, which are no joke. As a natural communicator, this season of my life was quite a massive challenge which brought a great deal of reflection to me about how much I needed to take care of myself and how little I had been. My Great Aunt Julie is an opera singer and growing up, whenever we'd visit, she would remind me to speak in a way that would protect my instrument. This is an ode to her and her wise words, and to the staggering necessity to take care.
lyrics
When silence heals and bonds they tighten
And bitterness starts becoming sweet
Minds ponder, senses heighten
Loosening my grip is necessity
I should have listened to my Auntie
When she told me not to speak severely
I got gravel in my throat
And the gravity is pulling me down
It’s high time to be clear on what I need
And crystal on what I don’t
This hellish stuff it’ll fuck you up
Beware of pouring from an empty cup
Pouring from an empty cup
I should have listened to my Auntie
When she told me not to speak severely
I got gravel in my throat
And the gravity is pulling me down
I am tired I can’t sing
And a worn out bell won’t ring so sweetly
I got gravel in my throat
And the gravity is pulling me down, pulling me down
Let me bounce from place to place
Without losing an ounce of grace
I swear on my dog I can do it all
I was a kid and was not thinking
I could lose what I was given so easily
I just started listening to this album today and am IN LOVE! Every track is perfect.
I'm slightly sad I didn't start listening to boygenius until but happy to be a fan of their music <3 lissie_a
1st time i heard DeathWish, i turned it off.
felt rushed, not the Isbell i've come to admire. really grab'd me when i took time to listen on the 2nd try. the writing on these songs stopped me in my tracks more than once. raw talent with just enough polish in the delivery.
thankyou Jason + 400 for another keeper swirlingmadness
